A TASER® is a type of advanced stun gun. These weapons have been all over the news lately, and for good reason. They are controversial weapons for anyone, police included. While a stun gun has a low amp and a high voltage, a TASER® can deliver extended electrical pulses for up to 30 seconds. During the stun phase, the victim will immediately fall to the ground and feel a sense of immobility and pain. Unlike a regular stun gun, you can deploy a TASER® from about 15 feet away and still hit your target accurately.
There are two main types of TASERs®: the police version and the civilian version. The police TASER® looks like a handgun and is considered more painful. The civilian version, the TASER® C2, looks like a big electric razor and shoots out electrical wires with confetti tags for police to identify. Most states allow citizens to carry a TASER® C2, but not the police version. However, most states also have restrictions on when and where you can carry a TASER®.
TASERs® are relatively expensive compared to other types of stun guns or pepper spray canisters. They are not one-time use weapons, but they are more complicated to use than a little stun gun. If you use the TASER® on an attacker and send the company a copy of the police report, they will send you a free replacement in case the police take your weapon. One downside of carrying a TASER® C2 is that they are not as discreet as other forms of weapons.
The TASER® is a good alternative for someone who dislikes (or cannot get) handguns, but wants something that will bring an attacker to his knees. It is a good idea to take a training class or self defense class before you use one of these weapons on a person.
