Preventing Luggage Theft While Traveling

Today’s international travelers require a high amount of security for their belongings. There is always the threat of losing luggage, but few people stop to think about luggage theft perpetrated by others at the airport. The fact is that you are placing a lot of trust in an airport for securing your luggage. However, you also need to take steps to keep your things safe.

A luggage lock is a good way to deter thieves. TSA-approved locks are the best kind because they have the highest level of security. You can choose from a few different kinds of luggage locks, such as combo or key sets. The locks should have a tamper-resistant color indicator that changes from green to red if someone tries to open it. You can purchase one of these locks online at a very good price.

If you like to travel with soft luggage, be aware that your bag is less secure than a hard luggage case. A thief could easily cut into the fabric, steal the contents, and walk away. Still, you should at least have a strap lock on the bag.

Some people think that merely tying on a one-time-use plastic strap is good enough. However, TSA agents usually cut these off when it is time to go through inspections. When this happens, your items are vulnerable to theft. TSA officials will not remove a strap that is secured with a combo or key unless they have reason to believe there is a prohibited item in your luggage.

You also need to think about luggage security when you reach your destination. Do not leave your luggage open in a hotel or motel. Keep the strap or lock secure on your bags at all times. If you follow these simple precautions, you can greatly reduce the risk of luggage theft.
